You have heard it many times before, “We have been baptized into Christ Jesus.”  It is easy just to let those words fall on deaf ears, or go in one ear and out of the other.  Few take the time to ponder the mystery and seek what the Scriptures are telling us when they say this. Perhaps even more mysterious is the fact that Jesus too was baptized.  Why! Why did He need to be baptized?
My heart aches for those who think so little of baptism, imagining it to be a sign of our decision to believe in Christ Jesus.  In thinking of it in that way, they miss the incredible truth of what is really happening in baptism. Baptism is God’s mysterious way of uniting Himself with us, as well as mysteriously uniting us with one another!  In our baptism, we are not only united to His Righteousness through faith; but we are united to one another as One Body, the Church!  And what’s more is that in His baptism, He is united to us and our sin through His love and obedience!  We are all baptized into one another!  And this unexplainable mystery is what happens in every baptism, whether one thinks so, or not!  Take some time this week to ponder this mystery, that you might get just a small glimpse of the height and the depth and the breadth, and the length of God’s love for us in Christ Jesus!
