“The Unforgivable Sin!” Mark 3 20-35

I find it funny how the most popular question I get as a pastor is: “Is it a sin if…?”  My answer is simple: “Why do you ask?  Especially when we believe, teach, and confess that Jesus has atoned for ALL SIN!
Now, given our Gospel lesson, Mark 3:20-35, it seems that there is this one thing that cannot be forgiven and this haunts people too. But the ancient historical church, including our Lutheran Fathers agree that if one is in fear that he/she has blasphemed the Holy Spirit, then it is clear that they have not.
Let’s talk about this.

“Children of God, Sinners, and Cheese Makers” 1 John 3 1-7

The King James Version of the Holy Bible renders 1 John 3:6 “Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known Him.”  Wow! Strong words!  But if true, doesn’t that mean none of us truly abide in Him?
Perhaps other translations have it right, for instance, the English Standard Version of the same verse reads: “No one who abides in Him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen Him, or known Him.
