“Power or Headship”

Sermon Teaser for August 26, 2018

In my all my years of counseling couples, and that’s about 30 years now, the most common issue by far is the struggle for power.  For years men have been fed a very poor interpretation of what it means to be the “head” of the wife according to Scripture, and it has played itself into millions of divorces and countless fights.

If you simply read the entire passage, you see that this has nothing to do with power, but with carrying a cross.  For the Scriptures say in verse 22 of chapter 5 of Ephesians: “For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.”

In what way does Christ exert His power over us?  Is it not rather His love that He exerts?  In fact, it is love, a love that calls Him to lay down His life!  When men begin to lay down their lives for their wives and carry their crosses, the fighting will stop, the churches will be filled with men and their families, and my counseling schedule will be almost empty!
